Thanks for stopping by. I'm Jerry Carter, the principal of Outdoor
Environments, a landscape design, contracting, and consulting firm located
in Richmond, Virginia. I hope your time here leaves you inspired and
reminded of how much beautiful outdoor settings can impact your home,
office, and place of worship.
My design philosophy is rather
simple: the outdoor setting should be a natural extension of
architecture, blending home and site into a harmonious whole. This is
done by taking cues from the forms, colors, proportions, and materials
of your home. Of course, a landscape is not only an extension of the
architecture of a building, but of those who live or work there and the
site on which the home is placed. Joining architecture, client
desires, and the natural surroundings in an exciting interplay is my
goal.
My role in developing beautiful landscapes can be
likened to a composer and conductor. I develop the theme and the
details of the score and then direct artists talented in particular
areas to bring it to life. Occasionally I will "pick up my instrument"
and play a bit, but for the most part I focus my energies on good
design and thorough coordination.
